Nous sommes bien seuls au bas de cette côte !
Bien seuls ! Et minuit qui tinte au vieux coucou !
J’ai peur ! l’étranger m’inquiète beaucoup.
Il quitte le feu, s’en rapproche, s’en ôte,

Ne parle qu’à peine, et jamais à voix haute :
Cet individu médite un mauvais coup !
Nous sommes bien seuls au bas de cette côte !
Bien seuls ! Et minuit qui tinte au vieux coucou !

Oh ! ce que je rêve est horrible : mon hôte
Poursuit la servante avec un grand licou.
J’accours ! mais je tombe un couteau dans le cou,
Éclaboussé par sa cervelle qui saute…
