If I Had Known

If I had known that you'd become
an implacable hag,
I would have quickly stepped aside and let you hold the bag.
If I had known that you'd become
a mercenary thief,
I would have made you share the bills and escaped with relief.
If I had known that you'd become
an impertinent shrew,
I would have turned the other cheek and let the venom spew.
If I had known that you'd become
an unfaithful comate,
I would have kept your heart at bay and refused to relate.
If I had known that you'd become
an enigmatic sphinx,
I would have chosen solitude and given you the jinx.
If I had known that you'd become
the one I came to know,
I would have run the other way and let emotions go.
