Pieces of My Past: An Assortment of Words from a Difficult Time

Have you ever lain in your bed and just cried?
because you're ugly?
Because you're not good enough for anyone?
Counted your flaws head to toe, making yourself feel worse?
Cried because all the comments people blurt out actually hurt?
Cried because your family is dysfunctional and never understands you?

They tell you to stop complaining.
You have it better than kids in Africa,
Even though they don't understand your life either?
You don't want to feel like an attention seeker,
So you bottle everything up.

With friends and family, you've created this lying smile...
And worst of all, people believe it.
But at night time, when you're all alone in bed,
The girl who everyone always thought was so happy
Is crying her broken heart out.

Telling someone who has depression to "just get over it and be happy" is like telling someone with a broken leg to run to a hospital.
Telling someone with an eating disorder to "just eat and don't worry about your body" is like telling someone who just got shot to go hug his shooter.
Telling someone to "shut up" or "leave me alone" when they ask for help is putting the pill in their hand, the bleach in their cup, their head in the noose, the gun in their hands.
Think before you speak.

Put down the glass
Turn on the light
Don't cry yourself to sleep tonight
Someone loves you
Someone cares
Please don't push me over there.
I won't tell you you're wrong or you're right
But I'll let you cry on my shoulder 'till it's all alright
If that's what it takes to show you you're loved
Then I will do it a million times over
You're in pain
And I know it
Don't hide behind that smile
The others may buy it
But I see your suffering
Don't suffer in silence
Talk to me
The scars aren't worth it
You come to me broken
I want to make you whole
