A Back Porch Lullaby
Tommy L. Maddox 1972 (North Carolina)
A gentle breeze blowing in from the south, with crickets chirping soft and quiet.
Off in the distance, an old owl sings his song of questions.
The creaking sound of a rocking chair, as daddy softly picks his guitar to the sounds of a back porch lullaby.
On our back porch on a warm spring night, mamma rocks me gently in her old rocking chair.
Daddy plays the notes of a song and the world drifts by without a care.
With the crickets as his choir and an owl as his beat. The frogs join in with their rhythmic melody.
As the world falls asleep to this lovely song of peace.
I listen quietly and my eyes slowly begin to close, I know I have heard a friendly back porch lullaby.
