What makes a man; A letter to my father.

Growing up, most kids played catch with their father.

Me?

I played hide and seek.

A game to most but it’s no fun for me because when I lose I get a beating.

Running for my own life at the age of seven,

Before I even knew what that four letter word meant.

Father of mine,  let me make one thing clear.

You will not break me.

Whether it be a right hook from your fist or a jab with your words.

You can bury me alive under the surface of this earth and I will respond with the same reply every time you threaten my life.

“Do your worst.”

Because to me, you’re a waste of energy.

I let your anger fuel my success.

I don’t say this out of pity, I don’t say it because I want you to be sorry.

Believe me, I’ve heard enough apologies.

I say it because I’m proud.

You’ve taught me what it means to be a man by the cruelty of your own hands.

Your lessons beaten into my body and mind made me take the time to realize that there is so much more to life than being angry.

In your eyes I’m a failure,

I’m lazy,

I lake motivation and drive in life.

To most?

I’m spectacular,

I’m caring,

I’m kind and I never lie.

I’m all the things you hate because you can’t relate to my philosophy.

The only thing we share is my middle name.

I stopped playing your games.

Countless nights spent crying in my bedroom wondering how and why my own father would say he wants to be the reason I die.

I spent fourteen years of my life in recovery from these wounds you’ve handed to me.

At this point in time I am strong,

I am patient,

I am compassionate,

I accept my past and I choose to move forward.

Our ideas of success are vastly different and I can honestly say that I push myself to be a better man that you every single day that I spend alive.

You can tear me down, but you can never take my pride.

So tell me now, father of mine.

Do you think you can hurt me?

Put all the pressure you want on this body and mind of mine.

But remember.

Pressure is what makes diamonds shine.
