Great imagery of the temporal flesh being removed from the eternal soul. Entering eternity freed of the chaff. This is definitely a poem that causes you to ponder life and death. Well Done John!

Thank you so much! Your comments mean a lot to me.
I was intentional about not being specific about what the “news” referred to. Though it was something specific to me, I wanted the reader to place their own personal experience into the poem. What a great line by Emily Dickinson. Though the connection with her poem was a coincidence, the lark’s song did represent that “hope” returning and a new day.

Thank you again for reading it and your comments.

Wonderfully written! Definitely speaks to me seeing as I was very reluctant in sharing anything I’ve written until very recently.

I always struggle to turn a phrase in a way that makes the reader pause and reflect. I envy your ability to do that. I love this poem, especially the third stanza. Very well written.

Spot on. That is exactly what I was attempting to convey. You might of explained it better than I could.
The genesis of the poem was trying to compare and contrast the change of hot and cold themes to describe her. Though there is still some of that, it slowly transformed more into Dead Ringer. Someone who has changed into a bitter and hostile person, and whose appearance is a constant reminder of what he’s lost.
Thank you for reading it and taking time to discern it. I’m the same way when I read poetry.

I really enjoyed this poem. The message is spot in. “United they stand and divide us all” is a great line.

One thing really stands out to me as I read through all of these entries. We all had the same objective “write a poem”. With that same objective, there are 150 COMPLETELY different themes and styles. It’s why poetry is my favorite art form. I’m grateful to have found this site.

So many great lines in this poem. I really love the line “ Shaped like little lipstick-laced kisses, on a old-timey handkerchief.”.
Really well done! I was surprised that you wrote about how you don’t like strawberries. If you can write this well about something you don’t like, the sky is the limit on the things you do like. Thank you for sharing this poem.
