The tectonic drift of the soul from its moorings began in Eden in not so modern times. Even so, the first humans are about as modern as they come, aren't they?

Of all the goods, that by their nature are essentially good, love trumps them all.

The idea being human intelligence is no match for canine fidelity. At least, where such qualities can be observed in the animal, these should serve as a simile for what so much of humanity lacks.
