Analysis of Anatomy of Evolution

They cradle my decay,
From birth to breast-
Transcending canvas, each stroke in flesh.
Youth knows no world, knows no sin-
Still lambs grow lost in time’s wane,
Made sinners, with words that lie.

They collect my archive,
Not of fable, nor of myth.
Shattered glass, I catch the light-
Reflect in fragments, fractured lines.
If love is war, and war is love,
Let these gashes tell my tender tale.

They unveil my antiquity,
Every bated breath on sacred limb-
Where crimson walls pulse and ache,
No greater release than nectar’s spill,
A silver kiss that parts the skin,
Borders of blood shape broken land.

They speak of me-
Of all I left unsaid.
My story etched in skin to keep.
The scratch of steel on tender depths,
They laid me down-
raw and pale.

No scars of glory,
But wars of silence, wars unnamed.
They are my scars; they echo loud-
I made them-
they forged me.

No beast, no saint am I-
I am evolution, carved by hand.

About this poem

We often view evolution to be something of which is wholly growth and without the taint of ‘decay,’ this is a concept I have explored further in order to show the side of human development which includes the vulnerable and the bare. One of the most delicate parts of the human experience, including my own, is with the physical manifestations of inner grief. We create prohibitions in regards to things such as self-harm, but instead of creating a rhetoric of weakness to this part of existence, I wrote this poem to show that you should never be ashamed of things you have been through and instead embrace your journey of evolution.

Navnoor Sandhu

Born in Surrey England, Navnoor has always had an inclination towards the arts. The art of songwriting and music has been her main drive, with songs through the ages reflecting her inner development. This love for conveying feeling and growth through words has expanded to poetry, of which she is passionate about de-stigmatising and empowering the parts of human existence which are often the most vulnerable. more…
