Analysis of Horror Poetry Set #001
Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)
AQUEOUS (I)
Aquatic horror
With extended, sharklike teeth.
Meant for rending flesh.
EVIL PRESENCE THREATENING
An evil presence
Threatening your existence,
Fills your heart with dread.
EVIL SEEDS
Evil seeds planted
Soon to reach fruition as,
Terror grips the land.
EVIL, SLENDER HANDS
Evil, slender hands
Reaching out toward your throat,
Gouging at your eyes.
EVIL SURROUNDS US
Evil surrounds us
Spreads its arms like a lover,
Leads us to our doom.
AN EVIL TALISMAN (II)
An evil amulet
Made of burnished black stone,
Used to conjure death.
EVIL TEMPLE CURSES
Evil temple curses
Bring doom to explorers, who
Ignore warning signs.
THE EVIL WITHIN
Evil lives within
The hearts and minds of many,
Even saintly folk.
FEAR THE DARKNESS
You fear the darkness
Fear the shadows, fear your dreams;
Fear being alone.
FEAR THE DARK WOODS (I)
Fear the dark woods
Haunted by strange apparitions:
Few come out alive.
FEVER DREAMS
Fever dreams haunt you:
Dreams of the dark years ahead,
Few as they may be.
FEVER DREAMS TORMENT
Fever dreams torment
Test your very sanity,
Wracking at your brains.
IMPOSING STONE STRUCTURES (II)
Imposing structures
Made of stone and weighing tonnes,
Built to please old gods.
INHABITANTS OF HELL
Rank, putrified flesh
Doomed to fire and burning oil,
The inmates of Hell.
AN INHUMAN MONSTER
A writhing monster
So huge and powerful,
Thoroughly inhuman.
INNOCENT WATCHERS
Innocent watchers
Silently scream in terror,
At awful things done.
INSANE PROFANITIES
Morbid fantasies
Of insane profanities,
Sweeping through your mind.
THE INSANE SCULPTURE
Statue sculpted
By a madman, shows a figure:
That brings insanity.
INSECTILE DEMONS HUNT
Insectile demons
From another time and place,
Hunting human prey.
INSECTILE FIENDS HUNTING
Insectile fiends hunting:
Chitinous clicking sounds,
Terrify their prey.
INSECT-LIKE CREATURES
Insect-like creatures:
Lovecraftean fantasy?
Or dire, horrid truth?
THE INTENSITY OF FEAR
Overwhelming fear:
Terror is ruling your life:
Too afraid to scream.
IN THE BURIAL GROUND
Cruel, evil spirits
Lurking in the old graveyards,
Ready to leap out.
IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT
Whirling images of
Faces and hands, in the dark night;
Closing in on you.
IN THE DARK OF WINTER
Evil slowly creeps
Through the dim-lit alleyways,
Late one winter night.
IN THE GRIP OF TERROR
Gripped by a terror
Too awful to contemplate,
You flee a dark house.
AN INVISIBLE HAND
An invisible hand
Wielding a gleaming dagger,
Waiting in the dark.
JUDGMENT DAY COMETH
Judgment day coming
Angry god among us today;
Godhead achieved.
THE LAMIA STRIKES
A large snake coiling
Changes to a woman:
Beautiful but deadly.
LEVIATHAN
Vast misshapen head
Powerful segmented limbs,
Feeding strength to kill.
LOATHSOME PUTRESCENCE
Loathsome putrescence:
Living jelly that slithers,
Menacingly near.
LOATHSOME SERPENT GODS
Loathsome serpent gods
Called up to witness evil,
Done by fallen priests.
THE LONELY HUNTER (II)
Mournful cry of a
wolf in the night: Werewolf? Or
just lonely hunter?
LOST SOULS IN TORMENT (I)
Lost souls screaming out
in torment; as their sins are
finally paid for.
THE LURKING HORROR
Expression of mad fear
Set a dead face,
What horror lurks nearby?
THE LURKING TERROR
Darkness is falling
Night-time is closing in:
Terror is lurking near.
THE MADMAN ENTERS
Spotting a window
(Open and showing no light!),
The madman enters.
MAGIC SIGNS
Evil magic signs
Used by the adventurous,
Only bring them doom.
MALEVOLENT FACES
Malevolent faces
At the window. Leering at
Intended victims.
MALIGNANT EYES
Malignant eyes stare
At their intended victims,
Holding them entranced.
MANIFESTATIONS
Madness is lurking
Evil manifestations;
Take over control.
MAN-MADE MONSTERS
The nightmare products
Of complete genetic chaos,
Man-made monsters live.
MARTYRED HEROES
Ghosts of martyred heroes
Still fighting ancient battles,
Wars long won or lost.
MEDUSA
Hair of writhing snakes,
A glance that petrifies;
Evil in her heart.
MENACINGLY LONG NIGHTS
In a house of shadows
You long for daybreak,
Yet night-time marches on.
THE END
