Les gueux



La misère séchant ses loques sur leur dos,
Aux jours d'automne, un tas de gueux, sortis des bouges,
Rôdaient dans les brouillards et les prés au repos,
Que barraient sur fond gris des rangs de hêtres rouges.

Dans les plaines, où plus ne s'entendait un chant,
Où les neiges allaient verser leurs avalanches,
Seules encor, dans l'ombre et le deuil s'épanchant,
Quatre ailes de moulin tournaient grandes et blanches.

Les gueux vaguaient, les pieds calleux, le sac au dos,
Fouillant fossés, fouillant fumiers, fouillant enclos,
Dévalant vers la ferme et réclamant pâture.

Puis reprenaient en chiens pouilleux, à l'aventure,
Leur course interminable à travers champs et bois,
Avec des jurements et des signes de croix.
