TO MY HUSBAND

We have not found all peace and joy
Adown the trail of years.
We've had our share of heavy loads,
Our share of pain and tears.
We've watched with fear and aching hearts
Beside a wee one's bed,
With love and hope, and faith in God,
Till health has blessed instead.

Wealth's lavish hand has passed us by.
We've struggled slowly up.
But we have gathered violets
And yellow buttercups.
We've heard the music of the stream;
We've seen the purple mist
Of evening shadows on the hills;
And morning grass dew-kissed.
We've been denied the chance to see
Man's famous works of art.
But we have seen the masterpiece
That came from God's own heart.

The years ahead, as they appear,
Must have their toil and pain.
We'll have to struggle, save and plan,
A livlihood to gain.
But with them will come added grace,
And One who cares will share.

No, I don't mind the poverty,
The interludes of tears
That purge our hearts and keep us still
Uncalloused by the years.
As long as faith is still undimmed;
As long as hearts are true;
The clouds of life - I fear them not,
While God is near - and you.
