Dear Mother, Our Matriarch

Youthful heart, yet
Steel of Wisdom,
The Embodiment of Strength and Unshakeable Faith -
"She's a Force to be Reckoned with!" - they say
She's a Lioness, so Regal, so Proud,
So beautiful, so lively, so bubbly, so warm, energy so contagious,
a treasure chest of wisdom -
But don't you ever cross her or her "Children", watch out!!

She is affectionately called MOTHER by many because
Her life role was self-explanatory --
TO MOTHER,
Those who needed to be Mothered
She birthed us a chance at life,
taught us how to fend for ourselves...
She's the Mother Hen who fussed over her chickees and lil chickadees and lil lil chickadees
Just to make sure all was well with our souls

Many of us were led to Christ through Her -
Her example, her life, her Walk, her devotion, her testimony
Did she made mistakes?
Yea, that's human nature
But she was still a Messenger of the Good News,
She was on Flaming Fire for Christ!!

A long and fruitful Life she had,
Rooted deep in the history of the Carolinas in the Great Depression
She was lucky #5 from a large family that triumphed through steady invaders called Poverty and Jim Crow...
Yes, she was a survivor who later traveled to the Great City of New York in her youth,
Kept steady post right here,
in Far Rockaway, Queens, and beyond...
She planted seeds, sprinkled here, there and everywhere she went
She tirelessly watered, nurtured and sheltered,
Was relentless, tenacious and determined
Was a Masterminded of Finished Products -
Of a community of locals born in Baby-Boomer and post Civil Rights-era -
Who are now paying respects for her and other Church Mothers' contributions towards their tender developing years...

See,
I KNOW She's Resting!
Those who know her KNOWS She is Resting!
She was Prepared!
Had Nothing to Fear!
Because She Knew who her Maker was!
She Loved the Lord!
She is at Peace
She did her Work
She was MOTHER!
That was her title,
That was synonymous to her name,
Mary, the Mother of Jesus
It wasn't a Coincidence,
That was God's Plan for Us
Her Purpose,
was All She Knew
and that's why we love her
because part of Her Within, Represented the Man Above

See the Maternal Line is definite & infinite
It could trace back to the beginning of time
So because of Mother, we know where we came from
Our Roots will continue to Expand Deeply
From all the Fruit she bore
On her tree
We Are Her Fruit!
But! That's the surface of Her-Story -
Which has just began a New Chapter!
So let's Celebrate!

We love you Mother!
and soon, we'll meet again!

About this poem

I wrote this poem on the day my grandmother passed away on September 3, 2017. The words came to me and flowed out of me into my pen, and spilled onto the paper. I reflected on how much she impacted and influenced myself and my family and read it aloud at her funeral a week later.
