Your Voice

From first draw of breath
Wrapped in a swaddle of pink or blue
A color decides
How the world sees you

Your name
A gift or based on a whim
Close friend or fantasy
A long dead branch on the family tree

Faith, fear
Language and emotion
Political views absolute
Opposing opinions put on mute

Money, plenty or none of it
Bias, bigotry
Racism, class division
All ingrained, absorbed into your sponge like brain

A truth seeker
Don’t ask questions
Choke it down
Rock the boat and you may drown

Still standing still?
Observing or searching
Lost or patiently waiting
Time is precious don’t waste it

A societal coven
They try to mesmerize
De-sensitize and proselytize
To conform is spiritual suicide

Tin cup or golden chalice
A mud hut a gilded palace
Happiness is where you are, it’s a choice
Don’t be silenced find your voice

I like your poem. It presents the challenge from many of its interesting and intricate angles: you begin with the choosing of the baby's name, you end with a show of strength: "...it's a choice."
