December Night: To Scott
The front porch lantern is lit, on this chilly
December night, ready for you
To step in and join in
and guide us and prod us onto our best selves.
Your voice, your ideas linger in us, among us, as we journey into our Savior’s call for Peace.
“Heavenly peace” seems far away, and yet
promised to us.
“Peace on earth”, while missing you so greatly, so deeply, so longingly; your family, here on earth.
Yet when you left this place, our gentle Savior promised a gift of peace; He holds it out as a gift to us.
Can we see or hear it? Can we hold it?
Not yet, not today; but it is promised.
It circles around us, in music,
in a conviction of our hearts,
in a pulling of our hearts toward the giver of Peace.
So on this dark night,
the light from the porch lantern reminds us to search deeply, to comprehend in any way, that you now have peace beyond our understanding, and that a very bright and grand porch lantern awaits us all,
and we will one day join you in the warm brilliant light of Heavenly Peace.
About this poem
This poem is inspired by grief and faith; I lost my cousin 6 weeks ago; he was my first best friend for 59 years. He deserves remembering and celebrating. This poem feels like his comfort to us as he had a strong faith. Christmas songs are difficult when in grief; thus the peace we crave can be difficult.
