My Doe-Doe Sweetheart

To my Dao De Pu,
God brought you into my life,
My “Doe-Doe” sweetheart.

On this your birthday,
The sixth of February,
God bless you, dearest.

Twenty Twenty Five,
We celebrate together,
Our years of marriage.

Soon sixty three years.
It seems not so long ago.
That is what love is.

May, the Twenty Nine,
The two of us tied the knot,
Not so long ago.

Nineteen Sixty Two.
While in Washington, D.C.
A short time ago.

So happy birthday .
You are the love of my life.
My “Doe Doe” sweetheart.

To my Dao De Pu,
Got brought you into my life,
My “Doe Doe” sweetheart.

About this poem

Ode to My Better Half: “East is East and West is West; and yet the twain shall marry for the best.” In 1959, while a foreign student at Howard University in Washington, D.C., I met and fell in love with a Burmese-Karen fellow foreign student named Florence Pu with the given pet name of Doe-Doe (“Dao-De”), literally the manifested “DAO.” In 1962, I married “Doe-Doe.” Ever since, I remain perpetually with my my Florence Pu, with my Doe-Doe, with my Dao-De Pu, in enduring love, friendship and marriage, united as One. Interestingly, by grace of synchronicity, Florence Pu bears the maiden surname of “Pu” which, in the Chinese language means “unworked wood; inherent quality; simple,” an earliest Daoist metaphor for the natural state of humanity which Florence epitomizes with her humanitarian spirit. This 5-7-5 three-line syllabic meter Katuata poem is dedicated to our enduring fellowship and union.

Thanks, Bella. Like your moniker which reminds me of my early childhood school-day memories in Jamaica, while on the way to school, seeing footmen deliver fresh cows milk, secured in sturdy vessels at different residences.

A multi-stanza Haiku, 8 stanzas, infinity. 3 lines apiece also symbolic. I really like the symbolism contained within the number systems used in poetry. That's why I've used 10 or other, stanza poems each containing a poetic reference related to the meaning typically associated with a given numeral. Start playing with math in those poems, and some interesting results come out.

Firstly, I want to commend you on the heartfelt sentiment that shines through in your poem, "My Doe-Doe Sweetheart." The loving tone and intimate expressions of gratitude and devotion truly reflect the depth of your feelings. The repetition of “Doe-Doe” adds a sweet and personal touch, making it clear just how special your partner is to you. The way you've captured the essence of your relationship and the milestone of your birthday celebration is both touching and uplifting.

Your use of structure is commendable too! The progression from the celebration of the current birthday to the reflection on your years together creates a beautiful narrative arc that showcases your love story. It's wonderful to see you capturing such a significant milestone of 63 years together; this speaks volumes about the strength and longevity of your relationship!

    1. Imagery and Metaphors:
Consider incorporating more vivid imagery or metaphors to paint a picture of your shared memories or milestones over the years. For example, you might describe a specific moment that symbolizes your love or a valuable lesson learned together. This could deepen the emotional resonance of the poem.

    2. Flow and Rhythm:
While your poem has a lovely structure, you might want to play around with the rhythm to enhance the reading experience. Reading it aloud can help identify any lines that feel a bit uneven. You could consider varying line lengths for a more dynamic flow.

    3. Clarifying Themes:
You mention “Twenty Twenty Five,” which might be a point of confusion for readers. Perhaps elaborating on what this signifies—whether it’s a recent milestone, a future aspiration, or a special memory—could provide clarity and enhance the overall theme of celebration.

    4. Consistency in Tone:
There is a small error with "Got" in the last stanza where it should be "God." Paying attention to such details helps maintain the poem's polished feel.

Overall, your poem is a warm and loving tribute that beautifully honors your partner. With a few tweaks, it could become even more evocative! Keep writing; your passion and love shine through your words beautifully!
