Vær hilset, Du Fortids Toledo

Vær hilset, Du Fortids Toledo,
    Du ridderlige gamle By;
Hvor Maurerklinger blev' smeded',
    om det gaaer i Verden Ry;
Her er saa eensomt og stille,
    forfaldent, øde og stort;
Af rustædte Hængsler er faldet
    Alcazars Vinduer og Port.
En ridderlig Gaard er nu Vertshuus,
    min Stue en gammel Hal;
End pranger Familievaabnet
    over den aabne Portal.
Her er ei Kamin, men et Ildfad, -
    jeg hører den styrtende Regn,
Den skyller ned som en Syndflod
    over den udbrændte Egn.
De nøgne, graagrønne Klipper
    sig løfte langs Tajos Bred,
De kjende den larmende Fortid,
    og Nutidens Eensomhed;
De hørte Mahomed prises,
    og Chorsang til Jehova;
Nu høre de Locomotivet,
    som kommer og bruser herfra; -
Og saa er igjen det stille,
    Alt rundt om øde og stort;
Men deiligt snoer sig et Viintræ
    om Byens ældgamle Port,
Og der, bag det gittrede Vindue,
    den deiligste Rose jeg saae; -
Og den havde kulsorte Øine,
    tidt vil jeg tænke derpaa.
