GEMs

GEMs

I thought I had you, you knew you had me,
Two peas in a pod I thought, lost out at sea.
I feel the water piling up, beneath the breaking waves,
I’m not looking anywhere, even with this fixated gaze.
A sense of urgency flooded my soul,
Drowning now I just want to be at home.
Instead I feel the pressure, building inside my head.
I can’t sink any further, I don’t want to end up dead.
But those GEMs sat at the bottom of the sea, shining ever so brightly, reflecting back at me,
If I only knew from the beginning, how deep this could be,
You never showed me, how is it only now can I see.
I can’t cut off my oxygen, but you think again I will,
I think this time I’ll stay here in the calm now, nice and still.
I wanted the GEMs, they no longer want me,
Certainly now I’m trying to reach the best of my ability.
I realise now this is how it always was,
You dragging me to the bottom, just because.

About this poem

I’ve been through a terrible break up with a girl. I thought she was the light of my life, but she’s shown me she was far from that. This poem encapsulates what it like to love someone who did love you back, but in a very unhealthy way that suited them. I hope it bring solace to anyone in the same position as I find myself in now.
