Le Fleuve



Emporte dans tes yeux la couleur de ses eaux.
Soit que son onde lasse aux sables se répande
Ou que son flot divers, mine, contourne ou fende
La pierre qui résiste ou cède à ses travaux ;

Car, sonore aux rocs durs et plaintif aux roseaux,
Le fleuve, toujours un, qu’il gémisse ou commande,
Dirige par le val et conduit par la lande
La bave des torrents et les pleurs des ruisseaux.

Regarde-le. Il vient à pleins bords, et sa course
Mène jusqu’à la mer la fontaine et la source
Et le lac tout entier qu’il a pris en ses bras.

Sois ce fleuve, Passant ! que ta pensée entraîne
En son cours où toi-même, un jour, tu les boiras,
Ta source intérieure et tes eaux souterraines.
