A love and a Lemon
My lemon,
You are the dearest stranger to me
And my most sparkling companion
Striking me with your uncanny resemblance
To a bitter taste I have encountered before
A slice down the middle unearths a summery spirit within
My white linen dress, a heart sewn on the inseam
A floral plate of blue, pink, and gold
Fruit flies rest on the edge of a drowning wine glass
A warm glow on my skin as a ray of sun guides me towards some green sea. But
It won’t be long before you perish
As soon as you are consumed, your skin withers Cold and idle
You withdraw within and disappear as quickly as I found you
I have no choice but to turn away
You no longer exist
I should not have removed you from that tree
You were resting so delicately
Golden and pristine; unscathed and prominently hanging
A reminiscence of a man who was dear to me and a man before that
Tantalizing and beautiful they were
They meant well and were good to me
Now unveiling sweet memories of the green sea
But they too became rotten. Consumed by the passing moment
All that remained of me was a greyed and silenced heart
An affliction to my very core
Reason cannot explain my poor fate
So I pick you, my lemon
I pick you hoping that this time you will stay golden.
About this poem
Some things in life we encounter often become familiar and unleash good memories. But I find they never seem to be able to stick or last forever. There is always a period of letting go.
