Butterfly and Rose

Butterfly and Rose

One morning deep in summer
a butterfly was birthed,
Of iridescent colors
it flit-fluttered in its mirth

Winding down a garden path
it rested on a rose,
That paled against its beauty
in bright sunlight, juxtaposed

Flushing pink and blushing blue,
with golden yellows wed
It bonded with the blossom
and remained in flower bed

When winter chill upon them fell
and garden took to sleep,
The two in perfect synchrony
till springtime thaw did keep

About this poem

We are stronger together.

Susan Mayer Brumel

A few years ago, I retired from a thirty-five year career in hospice counseling, at which time I began writing poetry. My poems are influenced by my patients’ journeys, the compelling beauty of nature, and the human condition. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…

Flit-fluttered and blushing blue - I love it when poets create new terms and do something a little unexpected with them. Keep up the great work. I'm a fan.

I took a screenshot of this piece, cropped it, and read and reread it so many times that I almost have it memorized!

The imagery is mesmerizing, and the rhythmic cadence so beautiful that the poem begs to be read out loud. It must be read out loud …

Thank you! This one was inspired by a butterfly I saw fluttering around a flower garden. It seemed to be drawn to one flower in particular which intrigued me.
