Not Like It Was

Life is a roller coaster
And sometimes we get off track
From plans that we have made
And get put on a new path
Some things are out of our control
But I didn't know
That you would have to go
So early
Too young
And now what's to be done?

My emotions are like an uproarious tide
Pulling me about on this outrageous ride
I may not say it all out loud
But they are swirling around inside
The questions...
I have so many questions,
But far fewer answers
I'm left to guess and infer
But in the end I'm never really sure

Why didn't I reach out and say
nice things to you more often?
Or check in on how you were feeling?

Will it ever be the same again?
No, it'll never be the same again.
Not like it was

Is there a restart button?
What could I do differently?
If only there was

Would it even make a difference?
Or was this tragedy destined to happen?

I don't know, oh, I don't know

But it's changed the way I think
Changed the way I value my loved ones
Today could be it.
We my not open our eyes tomorrow
Or breathe air into our lungs
So we've got to weed our gardens
So the flowers can flourish
So what, my circle is smaller?
I can pour into it more.
Better, than before.

Don't forget to let your loved ones know
how much they truly mean to you.
Do it while you still can.
Do it often.
Before it's too late.

About this poem

We have an idea of what the future will hold. Like it's a fact, but sometimes things don't go according to your plan.

They come to me in waves. Which ever emotion comes to my life. It's therapy, getting the words out on the page. I cry, laugh or strive to seek clarity of the whys. more…
