A Flag For Their Daughter

Flag For Their Daughter

I stop by to visit
I am taken back
To a place of tragic heartbreak
It’s been several years
And her memory is still here

Though I have changed
Time ticking incessantly in my ear
She remains the same
Her family haunted by her brutal end
Continuous thoughts of what might have been

Summer has arrived
A clear blue sky
The sun is shining bright
Melt off from the Rocky Mountains
The creek is running high

Once again, I stand in front of the old tree
The cross and stone a memorial for all to see
Towering above, a new symbol of hope and love
Waving gently in the breeze
A flag for their daughter

About this poem

This poem is the second poem I have written about a little girl who was murdered in 2012 when she was only 10 years old. The first poem is The Owl In The Tree. As in the first, this second poem is a moment in time when I visited the memorial site for her.
