Father

Father.

If I could walk….
one last time…..
with my father….
across the fields….
through the reeve….to cheer the mighty Roos.
I wouldn’t waste time on idle chatter….
bemoan…. why we were so poor….
why everything we had was used.
No….I’d say thank you.
Thank you for being my father.
Thank you for raising me.
Thank you for teaching me right from wrong….
for always being there for me….
come what may.
Thank you for making me ……
the man I am today.

As a babe ….you’d comfort me
cradled in your arms….
you nurtured…. protected me….
shielded me from harm.
As a child….wide eyed with wonderment
you taught me of life and love… then showed me what you meant.
Then into adolescence…
when I questioned….
why all the pain….
with kindness and understanding….there you were again.
And finally in young adulthood….
when I couldn’t see the trees for the wood….
you guided me…
encouraged me…
showed me that I could.

Then you were gone….
and I never got to say….
Thank you ….for being my father.
Thank you ….for showing me the way.
