SIR KNIGHT

SIR KNIGHT

You are sir knight not as you seem
On your charging horse by many seen
With lance and armour shield and sword
A noble not of this accord

Your lowly birth is hidden well
In difference that none can tell
Yet there are those that crave your fall
They search your past beyond recall

The Joust be noble by right of birth
Inherited or raised by deeds of girth
Trained and schooled you may well be
But a thatcher’s son is all they see

Measured and tested found wanting, not
Unseated the nobles in listes long forgot
A champion with common cause
Lauded by the crowd with just applause.

Not yet a Knight but a lowly Squire
He granted a kindness to one he called Sire
Crowned not a King but a Prince in a liste
His words won the day and a friend in the mist

Many years hence and the Squire is laid bare
Nobility resented their privilege they share
Discover the Squire to be a thatcher’s son
To the stock with the Squire there’s a day to be won

Hold now, there is King that was once a Prince
A kindness repaid on a friend many years since
Take knee as a thatcher and rise Sir Knight free
For I dub the Sir William for a boon shewn to me

His Lady gave favour tied fast to his lance
And Sir William adept made good of his chance
Unseated his rival was laid low to the soil
The Unscrupulous Noble by a Squire is foiled
