The Bond of a Fractured Mind
I recognize that pain,
The way your heart must hurt,
The sting of all it's cost you,
Misery from wounds - undeserved,
The past creeps up without a warning,
Breaks down your boundaries unannounced,
As you finally take a breath of solitude,
You close your eyes and your demons pounce,
As your walls come tumbling down,
I can feel that all too familiar ache,
I recognize the look of despair,
As you realize you're about to break,
When what you've worked so hard to keep inside,
Ruptures - and comes pouring out,
Your tears represent the breakage as they fall,
Until you're empty - inciting drought,
But your stubborn - strong - and gentle heart,
Continues to push through,
Because somewhere deep inside you know,
A heart like mine will need you too,
You persevere,
Past every bruise,
Through every furious storm,
I've been exactly where you are,
Come - let my fire keep you warm,
See - some things we were made to share,
Other's sadness and anguish,
We're created to bear,
I can help you walk your path,
Remind you what it's like to laugh,
And you can help me stand back up,
Remind me that I'm strong enough,
The bond created by fractured minds,
Is one that's destined to last,
Through any sorrow or joy in the future,
Despite a dark and harrowing past,
Solidarity created - impossible to sever,
An unbreakable set of spirits,
An ally in any endeavor.
About this poem
This is a poem I wrote to encourage those struggling with any pain, but especially mental illness. I got through my worst years and on the other side, I get to use my pain to help others cope with theirs. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and there is someone who has been where you are and survived. You are strong enough.
