Oh Little Dragonfly

Oh tiny, little dragonfly
I must persist you tell me why

Why is dragon in thou name
Your traits are clearly not the same

No magic power you acquire
Or guard a princess in a tower

You hoard no treasure in a cave
No precious gold which to enslave

No scaly skin or sharpened claws
No fire spewing out your jaws

You’re tranquil, hushed and so serene
Your temperament is never mean

Your wings a hypnotizing blue
As gorgeous as an ocean view

You flit and flutter all day long
Embracing Mother Nature’s song

You leave no footprints, not a trace
But touch my heart with your sweet grace

Although your name’s a mystery
Exquisite beauty’s given thee

While on a fishing trip in Canada, during shore lunch, I noted a dragonfly had mistaken the shore foam for a rock. It had landed on it and struggled to fly with wet wings. I picked it up and placed it on a rock in the sun. In a few minutes, her wings dried and she happily fluttered away. It gave me chills.

It seems we've this in common as I, too, love dragonflies as wrote about in my recent entry. This is a great piece of writing, Courtnie. I love the spin you put on it as well. Yes, why are they called "dragon" flies? Where's the smoke? Where's the fire??? I watched Game of Thrones and never once did I see a dragonfly, but man did I see a nightmare's fill of dragons. :-P

I love the short and sweet poem about a dragonfly. It conjures up a whimsical feel that I like and I like how it rhymes line after line.
