The Struggle
Melody Martinez 1986 (Texas)
Breathing through the worst headache possible,
Like a storm pounding inside my skull,
Each pulse a reminder, each throb a scream,
That I’ve lost a piece of my heart,
And nothing will ever feel whole.
I wake in the night, gasping for air,
The silence too loud, the emptiness too vast,
Sleep slips away, like a dream I can’t reach,
And I’m left with this ache,
That time seems to stretch and outlast.
The simple act of breathing feels like a chore,
My chest heavy, lungs tight,
As if sorrow itself has taken root there,
And won’t let me pull in the light.
I can’t eat, can’t think, can’t even exist,
Without the weight of what’s gone pulling me down,
Each breath feels like a question,
Each heartbeat a loss,
In a world that no longer makes sound.
But still, I breathe, though it hurts every time,
Because somehow, in this suffocating grief,
There’s a thread that keeps pulling me through,
A fragile, invisible line.
So I breathe, even when it’s impossible,
Even when my heart feels too shattered to mend,
I breathe for the love that remains,
For the memories that stay,
And for the hope that one day,
I’ll feel whole again.
