Maybe in another life

Ditipriya Saha 2007 (West bengal, Belgharia)

What is meant to be will happen, I believed.
But maybe in another life he could've known her soul.
Known her for who she was and not the fake smile which she always wore.
Maybe in another life, she would've been the first person to hear all his great news.
Because when he talked? Oh, her world reformed itself into myriad shades of hues.
Maybe in another life, she could've looked him in the eye and said, "If I look at you one more time, I'm scared I'll drown in this abyss," instead of her heart telling him "goodbye".
Maybe in another life he truly held onto her words too as she spoke not too often which made her words all the more special.
Maybe in another life, life wouldn't have been this much....crueler.
And if it's not meant to be, then why bother?
Because in this life you two will never be together.
If it had heartbreak written from the very first page, why spend your tears inside this so called cage?
She does not know nor how it happened.
But if there is one thing she is sure of is that to abandon all this, she would have to lament.
And so she does with nothing but words.
Because at the end?
Words were the one with which her couldn't be maimed.
And maybe this doesn't have a happy ending or any ending at all.
Since anything that truly matters isn't meant to end for once and for all.

About this poem

This poem reflects on the "what could've been" rather than the "what if"s in life when you're feeling strongly for a person you know you're not supposed to. Like, it just isn't meant to be then why did I meet that person? And why am I feeling this way? Go away, feelings you're not welcome here.
