Scarlet

Fueling the rage
that eclipsed the cityscape;
The sun couldn't hide
the doom that befell.
Haunted by the terrors
of, not the night,
but the beasts that
lurked among us,
in the light of the day,
lost in crowds
of the streets,
in buses, in parking lots,
in alleys deserted.
Tampered whiteness,
blotted by bloodred,
shattered dignity,
motionless laid.
Suffocated by the whims
of lust and barbarity,
the fire within her
was smothered.
Lost in the stacks
of cases untouched,
embraced by history
yet shunned by truth.
The screams that roared,
against the hollowness
of cursed humanity,
will prey on the qualms
of those forsaken souls
for whom even the devil
will refuse to weep.

About this poem

I was deeply agitated by the violent murder and rape of a medical student that took place in my city. As a student myself, I'm shattered to my core. Like me, thousands of women took charge of the night, rebelled against this atrocity. They claimed the night, defeating the darkness that patriarchy embodied. Leading a life as a woman is like walking upon thin ropes, constantly under the threat of exploitation. We struggle everyday, waging a war against the prying eyes that follow us everywhere. This poem is an expression of my feelings as a woman.
