Election Time

We need our eyes to safely do all the things we do.
Some of them are green or brown and some of them are blue.
Let's assume one eye sees promises and joy in everything.
The other sees reality and what the truth will bring.

Our eyes help make decisions in all that we explore.
They help us to decipher stuff and what may be in store.
There soon comes an election when we will have to choose.
One party soon will celebrate while one of them will lose.

People might accept the news exactly as reported.
Read between the lines, you'll see that much has been distorted.
We'll use our eyes to cast our vote in the next election.
The media is hoping we'll abide by their selection.

There is but one, a simple task for which I will be hopin'
I pray that when you cast your vote, it's done with both eyes open!

About this poem

The upcoming presidential election has turned into a complete circus. The candidates are more interested in throwing mud at each other than to tell us what they actually plan to do. The media and entertainment industry feels obligated to spew their take on things. The average citizen has no clue as to what's real or otherwise. We have become the laughingstock of the entire world.

I'm 76 years old and a combat veteran from Vietnam. I used to compose poetry while on ambush patrol as a way of staying awake on watch, since falling asleep could be hazardous to my health. I started early in life though, because, as a child, I would write little tidbits to my mom for the heck of it. more…

We have been for a long time, I’m afraid.
Together, and with both eyes open, we can imagine a future of kindness, peace, and love— for all the children of the world. Nicely penned, my friend.

Well what do you know? Someone actually read my poem. Thanks for your input.
I try to steer clear of politics, but the obvious bias of the media and entertainment industry is NAUSEATING !
