My Porcelain Girl

My Porcelain Doll

I found her at the airport
Not left behind
Discarded
Her smile was warm though distant
There was a stiffness a hesitation to engage
But we became friends, then more.

Her porcelain white skin
Showed signs of cracks and places where it had been mended
Just as I imagined her childhood heart had been
She kept a hidden past
Yet her smile wanted to break out
So we held hands then kissed

Decades have passed
We’ve both moved on
Along separate paths
Each day toward the unknown
Yet she still holds a place
Where porcelain dolls define a home
