As A Child

As a child, the king of angels,
Silently enters his world this day,
Lo, all creation pauses to peer into,
The squalid barn in which he stays.
Heaven quakes with joy and elation,
As Earth trembles in awe at the sight,
Of her infant God served unto her,
So far from safety and heaven’s pure light!

As a child, the king of creation,
Humbles himself before us this day,
Rulers and shepherds have journeyed to gaze in,
Wonder at why a king so sleeps as they pray.
In her heart, his mother adores him,
Joseph prepares for the hour they must flee,
Evil men who conspire to destroy him,
By nailing the babe in Mary’s arms to a tree!

As a child, the kingdom of heaven,
Is unveiled before us this night,
Watch as the scrim is rendered asunder,
As earth and heaven rejoice and reunite.
Lo, the hour the hope of all ages,
Joins again our midst as he brings,
Peace on earth to every nation,
First as a child and then as a king!

A beautiful and reverent Christmas reflection, masterfully weaving together the earthly and heavenly perspectives on the birth of Jesus, capturing the wonder, awe, and hope of the Nativity story.

Thank you! You've eloquently captured the essence behind the lyrics. The poem is yet another lyric to a Christmas song I wrote and have sung many times during the Christmas season in different churches. Your thoughtful analysis tells me that you are well versed in things Christian. .

Nice Christmas hymn. Does it have a tune?

Thank you, for your comment. Yes, there is a tune that I wrote for these lyrics. There is also a short refrain (i.e "Lo, as a child" repeated 3X between each verse) which I didn't include becauseI didn't think it worked very well as poetry for the contest.

I'd like to hear it sung, or see the sheet music.
