Just a little blind kid

Just a little blind kid
1

Flowers are beautiful, so they say,
Look, look along the school path way,
See so many colours bright,
Red, yellow, blue, pink and white.

Flowers have a sweet, sweet smell,
That I do know very well,
Their softness too, I can tell,
But their colours baffle like hell!

This thing called colour, I neither feel nor hear,
Please tell me why, Mommy dear?
What do "look" and "see" mean, oh so unclear,
Are they things we do to items near?

I am just a little blind kid, they say,
Will I see, when I’m bigger someday?
The day is warmer than the night,
But what is this thing they call light?

I know the sweet scent of flowers ,
But not their rainbow of colours.
How would I know beautiful things,
Stars that twinkle or rainbows in springs?

Are those tears dripping down my arm?
Mom, dear mom I meant no harm.
Because of what I say, please do not cry
For other kids, sometimes they lie!

I am an Australian with Sri Lankan roots. Though I have had a life-long fascination for international poetry, I commenced writing poetry only about a decade ago. The sudden passing away of a dear childhood friend was the initial trigger. I find written expression involving rhyme, imagery, and symbolism a fulfilling experience. I write poetry both in English and in Sinhala. more…

You aptly describe this poem as just “a glimpse into the life of a blind child.” As sighted, even compassionately-minded people, we struggle often to fully comprehend the inner world experiences of those who have little or no vision; or have lost, or now have exceedingly limited vision of the outer world. A brother of mine, a grown man, a senior citizen, now falls into the latter category. And yet, he remains surprisingly positive, emotionally strong, and even caring; despite his obvious handicap. Your poem is indeed merely a glimpse into the emotional life of the unsighted. And so you’ve depicted your poem as “Just a little blind kid.” We must certainly all wonder how much more is there to that ‘kid’ potentially, than what appears to us as his ‘lack’ of outer vision that, in some manner strange to us, may not hinder after all his actively roaming imagination to creatively ‘fill in the blanks.’ Thank you, sir, for this poem.

Thank you for the deep analysis Karl. Yes indeed, the actively roaming imagination can creatively fill in the blanks for the little kid. The understanding, love and understanding of those around him world help. Your observations made my day.
