The Tin Man

I once was hunter living out my day.
Ventured forward chasing a grey fox.
Since then I have been lost.
With no recollection of who I am.

A spell cast upon me by the dark witch not yet broken. Without a heart that's pure.
Been so many days in this dark forest.
Time cradles within my fingertips.

 Snow drifts across my face.
Never phazes me.
It's been awhile since, I felt the warmth of human touch.

Body aches holding a rusted smile.
Starring at a rising sun.
In this iron vessel. Never stops to amaze me.
Although these winter days have stiffen my limbs.
A little oil in my joints shall do the trick.

Sometimes I hear the lonesome wolf howl at night.
It comforts me knowing I am not alone.
Makes me forget about the cold.
Standing next to this dried up Birch tree.

There are at times when I close my eyes and dream.
To wake up and feel a beating heart.
Open my eyes and a white tail deer starring at me.
Trying hard not to breath to not scare it away.

Looking into its almond shape eyes.
I feel a connection as I hear it's beating heart almost beat within my chest. Although it does not sense fear. I am captivated for a moment.
Wishing the deers company to not end.

Slowly it starts to turn and wander away.
Finding it's way home to wherever it may be.
I do not look the same as I was since cast into this
iron kettle. There are now roots growing up my legs.
Green moss on top of my head and shoulders.

I have become part of nature.
Hear the frogs croak by the creek in the middle of spring. The curious squirrel that staggers along gathering all the berries it sees.

Memory is a little fuzzy in this tin head.
Hope that one day I remember who I was.
Till then I dream one day to open my eyes and feel a beating heart inside this empty chest.

The Tin Man of the forest I have become.
Should you stroll within the dark forest.
Through a broken yellow brick road.
Do not stray off the path.
A rusted face shall point you to the right direction.

Never mind the swift fox that stares.
He is just curious. I the Tin man mean you no harm.
Follow the north star beyond the Woodman trees.

Passed the village of the mushroom gnomes.
Do not be deceived by their mischievous smile.
I will grant you safe passage.
The Tin Man with no heart.

About this poem

I wrote this from a vision I had of the iconic characters from the Wizard of Oz before Dorothy, arrived and the things they encounter from the eyes of each character with a twist. From the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly lion. Let me know what you think.

Wow, this is such a cool and unique take on the Tin Man. I love how you make the forest feel alive, and that sense of loneliness mixed with wonder really hits deep. The part about dreaming of a beating heart was especially powerful. It’s like you’ve given him a whole new story before Dorothy even shows up. Really enjoyed this.
