Printemps oublié



Ce beau printemps qui vient de naître
A peine goûté va finir ;
Nul de nous n'en fera connaître
La grâce aux peuples à venir.

Nous n'osons plus parler des roses :
Quand nous les chantons, on en rit ;
Car des plus adorables choses
Le culte est si vieux qu'il périt.

Les premiers amants de la terre
Ont célébré Mai sans retour,
Et les derniers doivent se taire,
Plus nouveaux que leur propre amour.

Rien de cette saison fragile
Ne sera sauvé dans nos vers,
Et les cytises de Virgile
Ont embaumé tout l'univers.

Ah ! frustrés par les anciens hommes,
Nous sentons le regret jaloux
Qu'ils aient été ce que nous sommes,
Qu'ils aient eu nos coeurs avant nous.
