surprise surprise
it wasn’t christmas eve
or st. nicholas day
but I should get surprised
in a shabby and miserable way
it wasn’t even at easter
it was yesterday
and yesterday was monday
“payday”, I heard them say
it wasn’t my birthday
when I got the message
“it’s time to leave now
you are fired, get your luggage”
it wasn’t new year’s day
or the day before
but I let the corks pop
the firm doesn’t exist anymore
it wasn’t any holiday
or any day after
but when they went bankrupt
there was joy and laughter
‘tit for tat’ is in everybody’s head
use your fortune and your wits
‘tit for tat’ makes way and so I did
what had to be done to be quits
