When Sleep Alludes Me

My body aches and sags,
But my eyes stay quick.
I can't stop thinking.
Most thoughts pass by quickly,
Though some like to stick around.
They like to peak out from within my ears,
Wrap around my nose,
And get tangled in my hair.
They have quite a flair for drama
And love to paint.
They tell me stories of what could be
And they ask:
"Why not?"
I tell them "it wasn't meant for me."
They poke and prod,
They say "that's not it."
I close my eyes
And shake my head.
I say, "I'm sorry,
I'm just scared."
