Analysis of Tulip’s Kiss”

If tulip kisses
lips of spring
in dreams of warmth
that springtime brings
then when she blooms
with colors bright
will warm the chill
of darkest night

Cupped flower sits
upon a stem
that gently curves,
begins to bend
but penny dropped
into the vase
will stand her tall
for many days

Her satin petals’
brilliant hues
delight our eyes
the heart, her muse
and rainbow-ribboned
colors soothe,
a world
with perfect love infused

If she needs beg
of morning sun
and essence glows
till day is done
then when she’s called
to light the dark
her spirit’s flame
will kindle spark

And all the world
will better be
for once she bloomed
for all to see
and now we wait
to see her shine
in ways unknown
to earthly kind

About this poem

The tulip symbolizes hope and perfect love. In this poem, I compare the gift of a beautiful flower with the gift of a beautiful human being. Both leave us, wanting more of them.

I am a retired hospice social worker, who began writing poems about 2 years ago. I am married, a mom of two sons, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and grandma of two grandchildren who are the loves of my life. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…
