Analysis of The Haunting Hour”
“The Haunting Hour”
In the haunting hour of morning;
thoughts of you can’t be resisted
As before a new day’s dawning;
longing shore begs moonbeam kisses
Dreamt hands upon my body graze;
I feel my skin flush warm to cold
It is the longest hour of day;
I lie awake within its hold
Upon my open window’s sill;
in softest light of starry skies
Is perched a seagull, hushed and still;
a look of sorrow in his eyes
I wonder if he’s lost his way;
- for his nest mate does he pine?
I whisper kindly he may stay;
another roost he need not find
But off he took in moonlight dim;
without a word before he flew
Perhaps it’s I who needed him-
Perhaps it’s I, in need of you

About this poem
This poem addresses feelings about love lost, or love only dreamed about. The seagull may be seen as a symbol of this love, and all the emotions it evokes.
