Analysis of Staring into Darkness

Darkness grows in my doorway,
letting tears intrude
where music should reside.
I’m hungry for the sound of wind.
I listen so keen
for willow’s soft whispers,
but my mind finds only silence.
Time rests on my wrists
wrenching me prisoner.
Will I ever escape this gloom?

I am perched between forgiveness
and this cold sorrow
in which there’s no escape.
Staring out at my barony,
my exclusive realm
with its jagged mountains
that, like me, wear the face of age,
‘til some memory -
lost in mind’s crevices,
reminds me I was once alive.

Staring now into pitch blackness,
as sun’s burnished face
escapes this creeping gloom
that consumes me - entrapping me,
holding me hostage,
taunting me cruelly.
Have I not been punished enough?
Will this forlornness -
be my night’s visitor
now, and until my end of days?

About this poem

Grief is a dark emotion, and once it has grabbed you by its claws, the dark road ahead is gloomy, weighing its heavy weight across your shoulders, making it difficult to shake off.
