Under The Covers
A six year old ain’t supposed to stress
But images of fists flying are fixed in his head
Last night
Just like all the others
His parents pulled an all nighter
Fighting while he hid under the covers
He wonders if he blundered
And somehow pissed off his mother
Cuz for every punch meant for his father
One also missed and found the watcher
He tried to block her
Even cried out “stop it”
Then his dad fought back
Like rock em sock em robots
It was technically a knockout
This was his life
A daily journey to block out
All of the strife
So he peddled his bike
Around the block
Again and again
A plastic smile plastered on his face
Pretending he was winning a race
Or perhaps flying to a far away place
