Doorknob
A terrible thing happened today
You reached up and touched the doorknob
You turned it this and that way
It didn't open, but my heart stopped
Yesterday you couldn't reach up there
Your world was here on the floor
Still so much we need to share
Before you go out to explore
And there are dangers outside all around,
Skinned knees and broken hearts
Angry people will pull you down
Mean ones will tear you apart
So don't reach up for that doorknob yet
Stay here, laugh, sing and play
All of tomorrow's troubles let's just forget
I'm not ready for that day....
A wonderful thing happened today
You reached up and touched the doorknob
You turned it this and that way
It didn't open, but my heart stopped
Yesterday you couldn't reach
Your world was here on the floor
But there are things in your life I cannot teach
You must go out to explore
There are amazing sights, magnificent sounds Strangers will become great friends
There is kindness to give, new ideas to be found And true love to win
So for that doorknob you keep reaching high
We'll still laugh and sing and play
I hope it's long before we say goodbye
But I'll get you ready for that day
About this poem
I fortunately am able to spend every Friday with my now 18 month old grandson. He is growing and learning so fast. This is about the conflict of hope and fear in parenting/grandparenting.
