bearing

bearing that which I have not brought
What was brought on my being
Is a rage of a bearing that brought me to breaking
Broke my mind and my spirit from sorrow edged with anger
Anger that broke me to a thousand splinters
That sparkle like daggers
And sprinkle my presence
Like waypoints in a turning sea that tosses me shore to shore
Not of my choosing
But of my responsibility
I will litter them diligently
Knives on the beach,
Waiting to pop an innocent bloated whale

About this poem

bearing is a poem by Elaine Wilson about the pressure put upon people perceived as women, and about what it’s like to break under any kind of pressure. It seeks to convey the reluctance of being perceived by others, and to bear the weight of that perception.
