PETITION FROM PURGATORY
My last winter is soon to come
and the kids are already on fire
As I look back at their burning ashes
rising in the human smoke
like theocentric fireflies
flickering in the night
I ask why I am contented to merely sip
my tear-flavored tea
With this my soul blooms
and the choice is made
Even if we are only breathing
and naked mud
I have come to believe
in the God I never fed
I have set free the caged memory
of first love lost
still shivering under her velvet
and a millimeter of cloth
I will no longer require the company
of loneliness to keep me sane
I claim my ignorance as mine
alone
and walk forth into my brand new world
For regret has turned me
into my own stranger
in its sad and eerie scheme,
made me nearly vanish
without losing my way
So call this my petition from Purgatory
I'm ready for my old home
in the place where mortal gods dwell
It is here where we have power over gravity
and the moment we will cease to breathe
For this sleepwalker's eyes are open.
