Dark Moments

Sadie Shimel 2003 (Apple Valley, CA)

March 24

I think of skies,
I drink of memories that hold me tight,
Everything that’s done all right,

They fade into thin lines,

All about changing me,
Where do I draw the line?

Of picket fences & all the lemonade signs,

Where have I lost my mind?
Where have I lost my mind?

So out of touch with my heart,
I’ve sewed my skin that cuts me deep from within,
From the shattered walls inside my mind,

Where have I lost my mind?
Where have I lost my mind?

Have I lost the time?
Oh, tell me I didn’t mind,

Tell me I was brave enough somewhere along the line,

Here I am, 17,
Wondering why the world’s so mean,
23, resenting me,
35, forgot to breathe,
20 me, believe in me,

Seeking all these possibilities,
Look in deep,
Pulling out the demon inside of me,

I’ve sold my soul, but they don’t know,
Watching me, Tripping me,
Adding me up with the others, so I can’t see,
Blinding me from all the things I can be,
Making me believe no one has faith in me,
Dragging me in the deep with all the souls that no longer breathe,
Crushing me, Marking me, Hurting me,

Where have I lost my mind?

I’ve read the pages a thousand times,

Where have I lost my mind?

Somewhere along the line,

Have I lost the time?
Oh, tell me I didn’t mind,

Tell me I was brave enough somewhere along the line.
