Analysis of Words Upon A Page

Words Upon A Page

Your words ignite my spirit,
when its light begins to dim
And laugh out loud along with me,
when I’m happy once again

Sometimes they mock my own words,
with a quip and haughty tease
Then return with warm assurances,
that put me quick at ease

I don’t know how it happened,
that our friendship came to be
In our world of separate spaces,
it remains a mystery…

How with just some words upon a page,
lacking sight and sound and touch
About the other person,
we could learn so very much

And feel deep and lasting friendship,
growing stronger every day —
Never looking in each other’s eyes,
and though many miles away

Reflections of two open hearts,
in metaphor and rhyme
Souls discovering each other,
in virtual space in time

With only words to bind them,
to friendship ever true —
I’m so grateful for the written words,
that brought me close to you.

About this poem

On Thanksgiving, we give thanks and are grateful for the special people in our lives. Friends, old and new, and those we’ve made on platforms like this one- without ever meeting in person. This poem explores the mystery of making friends in our virtual reality, and how very real they can be. Happy Thanksgiving to all celebrating today, and to all of you, celebrating friendship every day.

Susan Mayer Brumel

A few years ago, I retired from a thirty-five year career in hospice counseling, at which time I began writing poetry. My poems are influenced by my patients’ journeys, the compelling beauty of nature, and the human condition. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…
