What is the Future of Democracy?
What is the future of democracy
in a world where only demagogues rule?
What is the future of humanity
in a world where lies of moguls
to some seem cool?
Where double talk Orwellian
mesmerizes some — media included
into mock rebellion.
What is the future of democracy
where social media go astray?
Where legislators build no real trust—
perhaps look the other way;
where rhetoric becomes a mask,
harboring pernicious lies;
where privacy is public knowledge.
Alternative truth as guise.
What is the future of our world
when freedom is held at bay;
where you and I, despite our will,
must live to find another day?
Trying to stop the steal of moral self
because of human greed;
of those with ultimate power,
hindering basic human need.
What is the future of our lives?
Where artificial intelligence
becomes the artifice platformed,
glamorized to whet our lust;
democracy in its wake deformed,
designed — with algorithm.
That human minds conceive;
structured strategically,
schematically — pictorially;
with base intelligence…
ultimately — to deceive.
What is the future of a culture,
with an algorithmic shape;
podcasted with a propaganda,
that leaves us all agape?
What is the future of such democracy?
Where the medium
is indeed — the message;
where social media platforms hinder;
democracy whimpering — suffering…
to keep alive its vestige.
About this poem
This nine-stanza poem takes a snapshot of societies around the world of the twenty first century, and makes the observation that the freedom of leading world governments, in conjunction with the social and cultural organizations they empower, needs to be critically examined with respect to the commonplace paucity of their ethical posture that unquestionably endangers the moral objectives of democracy.
