Soir religieux (V)



Un silence souffrant pénètre au coeur des choses,
Les bruits ne remuent plus qu'affaiblis par le soir,
Et les ombres, quittant les couchants grandioses,
Descendent, en froc gris, dans les vallons s'asseoir.

Un grand chemin désert, sans bois et sans chaumières,
A travers les carrés de seigle et de sainfoin,
Prolonge en son milieu ses deux noires ornières
Qui s'en vont et s'en vont infiniment au loin.

Dans un marais rêveur, où stagne une eau brunie,
Un dernier rais se pose au sommet des roseaux ;
Un cri grêle et navré, qui pleure une agonie,
Sort d'un taillis de saulenichent des oiseaux ;

Et voici l'angelus, dont la voix tranquillise
La douleur qui s'épand sur ce mourant décor,
Tandis que les grands bras des vieux clochers d'église
Tendent leur croix de fer par-dessus les champs d'or.
