I See Trees

I SEE TREES

I see trees
giant trees
rising up through the ground,
fighting for space, crowding the sidewalks
moving towards the sky,
pushing against buildings,
competing for a small piece of earth.

I see trees,
constrained by concrete,
contrasting the pavement,
ubiquitous to people
unmoved by their enormity
untouched by the twisted mirage of branches.
and indifferent to their beauty,

I see Trees
with 100 shades of green.
poised against one shade of grey.
People stay on the grey
Focus on the grey,
They don’t see the greens
And can’t see the trees.

I see trees
immense silhouettes,
of organic and fractal shapes.
Trees as tall as buildings,
Trees unscathed by the deafening noise of the city,
invisible to the cars speeding by-
unseen by people in the hustle of daily life

I see trees
living sculptures
dynamic art, growing out of the canvas,
gifts from nature, gifts to humans
adored by insects, cherished by birds,
captured by clouds
anonymous to people

I see trees,
majestic trees
sharing the earth, dominating the city,
opening their arms and flaunting their branches,
raining their leaves,
wanting to share, wanting to give,
screaming to be noticed.

I see trees.

About this poem

I came up with this poem one summer morning while I was looking out the window on a upper floor of a Seattle University Dormitory. After walking around the down area of Seattle along with walking around campus I became enamored with the trees I saw. I noticed I was the only one was excited about the trees and I realized most other people took the trees for granted.
