Balance

Oily, sulfurous, choking smog
Conceal thoughts one from another
Foghorns wail the search to connect
Collision bells sound an instant too late
Fractured, splintered spinning in circles
Alone in the fog, I am lost from myself.

Gentle breeze brings with it new life
The fog clearing slowly, slowly
My feverish, rotting spirit
Struggling against its own leprous mind
Desp’rately inhaling cool healing air
Life’s forgiving cycle begins anew

Compass needle now pointing true
Forward to the light I stumble
Cautious, falling, now gaining speed
Each step surer than the last one taken
Confident strides no more on shaky ground
Finally my goal is achieved; Balance.

About this poem

The 1990's were the years of my greatest poetry production. But, they were also a very difficult time in my life. During that period, I suffered greatly from depression. My therapist suggested I write a poem describing it. This is the result.
